Argogorytes mystaceus

Two-girdled Digger Wasp

HYMENOPTERA > APOCRITA | Aculeata > Crabronidae > Bembicinae (Bembicidae) [BWARS: Nyssoninae]

A large (10-13mm body length) predominantly black wasp, with yellow collar and thorax markings, an abdomen with two yellow bands plus a pair of yellow spots on S1, and with S4 either black or with a central yellow mark.

The species is common and widespread, and can be found from late April to June, sometimes well into July or August, in sunny, not necessarily sandy, locations particularly in open woodland. They dig their nest burrows in dry banks and provision the cells with froghopper nymphs, especially those of Philaenus spumarius.
