Mesoneura opaca

HYMENOPTERA > SYMPHYTA > Tenthredinidae > Nematinae > Nematini

A medium-sized (6-7mm) somewhat drab, but reasonably distinctive sawfly with variable appearance where the thorax may be almost entirely orange-brown or, in the darkest forms, all black. The tegulae and pronotum though are usually orange-brown in all forms. The abdomen is black, but may be rather yellow underneath. The legs are darkish yellow to weak orangey-brown.

The species is regarded as common, although distribution data is sparce. Females may be seen from April to June. Males are unknown. The larvae feed on oaks.
