An elongate, 5.5-8mm body length, black sawfly with bright orange legs apart from the hind tarsi. Adults can be found around hedgerows and meadows from April to September. The green larvae of the species live on various weeds, such as sorrel and dock. The mature larvae may also damage apple, raspberry or cherry when they bore into the soft wood or fruit for pupation. The species is listed as common and widespread.
