Abia sericea

Scabious Sawfly

HYMENOPTERA > SYMPHYTA > Cimbicidae > Abilinae

This medium-sized (around 10mm body length), metallic-green species closely resembles Abia candens with the main difference being that the yellow antennae are consistent in colour, whereas in Abia candens they are darker at both the base and the tip.

Both species are widespread and relatively common, although Abia candens is less frequent than Abia sericea. The larvae feed on devil’s bit and field scabious. Adults fly from May through to August and can occasionally be found on umbellifers and bedstraws.
