Small World Discoveries

Taking a close look at insects and other small species that can be found in and around East Dorset and the New Forest ...
DIPLOPODA (millipedes) > JULIDA (cylindrical or snake millipedes) > Julidae
Â
Tachypodoiulus niger is a medium to large sized, 15-40mm long, shiny black millipede with contrasting white legs and a pointed upward turned projecting telson. Whilst the colour contrast between the body and legs is usually distinctive enough to confirm the identity of this species, some individuals may be paler and, as such, could possibly be confused with other related species with projecting telsons, particularly Jules scandinavius. Immatures are brown, typically with pale longitudinal stripes, not dissimilar to Ommatoiulus sabulosus.
Apparently, this is one of the most widespread and frequently recorded species across much of the country, which is a bit of a surprise as to date I've only found one. However, I've only recently taken an interest in millipedes, so I hope to add some more photos to this page in the not-too-distant future. They are more of an inland, rather than coastal species, that can be found in almost any habitat, but perhaps more likely to be encountered in woodland or on waste ground. Â
