Nemasoma varicorne

DIPLOPODA (millipedes) > JULIDA (cylindrical or snake millipedes) > Nemasomatidae

Nemasoma varicorne averages around 6-10mm long, but with a diameter usually less than 0.5mm. Its general appearance and colouration are very similar to Proterioulus fuscus, but it is smaller and thinner. It also has a different eye structure with ocelli forming an equilateral triangle rather than a row with a few displaced above.

This species is almost exclusively found in woodland under the bark of both deciduous and coniferous dead trees. It is not uncommon to find Nemasoma varicorne, Proterioulus fuscus and Cylindroiulus punctatus together or in close proximity.
