Chordeuma proximum

DIPLOPODA (millipedes) > CHORDEUMATIDA > Chordeumatidae

Despite what I said in the introductory write-up for this order, I'm pleased that I've been able to include a second species. It was an unexpected discovery and, with it being so small, a rather lucky find. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was something different.

Chordeuma proximum is very simply described as a small brown millipede, up to 13mm long, with eyes comprising an almost equilateral triangular patch of ocelli. It is regarded as being identical to the rare Chordeuma sylvestre with only the males separable by examination of the gonopods. However, with that species being so rare and with Chordeuma proximum having strong south-western distributions, the identity really isn't in doubt. Analysis of the available habitat data indicates that the species has strong associations with woodland.
