Ichneumoninae

Ichneumon stramentor

HYMENOPTERA > APOCRITA | Parasitica > Ichneumonidae > Ichneumoninae > Ichneumonini

One of the featured species on the NHM identification guide to British ichneumonids. Described as another of the medium to large (13-18mm) black and yellow species where the female is distinctive, but the male is not.

The female has entirely yellow abdomen segments S2 and S3 with a yellow spot at the tip, and a clear yellow stripe on the hind tibia, which should separate them from other superficially similar species that have different colour combinations. Antennae are black with a white band. The males, identifiable by their entirely black antennae, have a more slender abdomen with the same yellow banding as the female, but without the distinctive yellow tip, which makes them very similar to other males of the Ichneumon genus.

The species has recently been named the Yellow-tipped Darwin Wasp (see Ichneumon sarcitorius for further detail).
