Cryptinae

Buathra laborator

HYMENOPTERA > APOCRITA | Parasitica > Ichneumonidae > Cryptinae > Cryptini

By comparison with the previous species, Buathra laborator is more widespread and, I'm sure, far more frequently observed than current records suggest. I've photographed it on a number of occasions now at a few different locations. That said, it could be confused with other not dissimilar black-bodied, orange-legged species and, consequently, a degree of caution is required before making an assumption from photos. Fortunately, the id’s here were independently confirmed, so I should be able to use the photos as a reference for future encounters. Note that the female ovipositor is much longer than seen in the three other members of the family that I'm able to feature.

Whilst researching the species I noted that it’s occasionally called the False Slip Wasp, which makes sense given that it looks superficially similar to Pimpla rufipes, commonly known as the Black Slip Wasp.
