Ichneumoninae

Barichneumon cf.gemellus

HYMENOPTERA > APOCRITA | Parasitica > Ichneumonidae > Ichneumoninae > Ichneumonini

This female was initially confirmed as a member of the Ichneumonini tribe but, even with some specific features including pale inner orbits, clavate antennae (slight widening before tapering to the tip) and a just-visible spot on the final abdominal segment, it couldn't be identified. However, it was then viewed by another expert who was of the opinion that it could well be Barichneumon gemellus, which is a rather scarce species. The photo provided sufficient detail to 'key' it out properly, but although Barichneumon gemellus seemed the best fit, there was concern about the colour of the hind tibia, which should have been reddish rather than black as they look in these photos. The jury is still out on this one, but at the moment it's the most likely candidate.
