Common Groundhopper
Tetrix undulata
ORTHOPTERA > CAELIFERA > Tetrigidae (Groundhoppers)
A widespread flightless species that can be easily distinguished from the less common Slender Groundhopper [Tetrix subulata] by a combination of features. The most notable are its slightly bulkier appearance, coupled with a very pronounced central keel on the pronotum and shorter hindwings. As the pronotum and wings do not extend beyond the end of the abdomen, the rear end tends to look cut off when compared with Tetrix subulata. The body length of both species is much the same, but the shorter wings reduce the overall size of Tetrix undulata to 9-11mm for the female and around 8mm or 9mm for the male.
The preferred habitat of Tetrix undulata is much the same as Tetrix subulata in respect of favouring places where there is some bare ground, but it is not so specific and, therefore, may be encountered in both damp and dry areas.
Although I've yet to photograph this particular groundhopper, I wanted to include a 'species account' for reference and comparative purposes - hopefully I'll be able to add some images to the page before too long.
