A family of gnats that superficially resemble small craneflies and are one of the few insects that can be seen flying in cold weather even when there’s snow on the ground, hence their common name.

The family characteristics are simply described as small to medium (3-9mm), generally light coloured with a long slender abdomen, legs and wings; ocelli present; top of the thorax with a V-shaped furrow; wing vein A2 short and curved and reaching the margin.
