Cryptops sp.

CHILOPODA (centipedes) > SCOLOPENDROMORPHA > Cryptopsidae

Without wanting to repeat any of the general information regarding the identity of the three Cryptops species either from the introductory write-up or the previous account for Cryptops hortensis, I thought that it would be useful to include a separate page for some of the individuals that I've photographed that, for one reason or another, I decided to leave as unidentified Cryptops sp.

In most cases this will be simply down to the length of the specimen. In other words, individuals that obviously can't be distinguished as Cryptops anomalans, but are around 30mm long and, therefore, could be Cryptops parisi or just a large common Cryptops hortensis. In this respect, some comparison photos could be useful. Hopefully, I will find one that is clearly more than 30mm, which I can regard as a 'likely' Cryptops parisi, but otherwise any questionable individuals may end up here.

At present, there are only two that warranted inclusion. They were found in completely different areas to each other and, as well as both being relatively long at close on 30mm, were both noticeably paler than any of the individuals I've labelled as Cryptops cf.hortensis. I'm not sure if there's any significance in this but, for record purposes, it makes sense to feature them here rather than leaving them on a hard drive where they may not be looked at again.
