Dascillidae

Soft-bodied plant beetles

COLEOPTERA > POLYPHAGA > DASCILLOIDEA > Dascillidae

Dascillus cervinus, commonly known as the Orchard Beetle, is the only member of this family in Britain and much of Europe. It's a widely distributed, but localised species, that can be found during the summer months in grassland habitats, especially near borders and streams.

They are readily identified by their large, 8-12mm body, oval form and densely pubescent dorsal surface, even though their general colouration may vary from one individual to another. They are typically light brown, but can also be various shades of grey. The tarsal segments are bilobed and obvious. The females are broader and generally paler, never dark grey, whereas the opposite could apply to the males.
