Nomada marshamella

Marsham's Nomad Bee

HYMENOPTERA > APOCRITA | Aculeata > APOIDEA > Apidae

One of the two larger black and yellow nomads, with well separated yellow spots on tergite 2 rather than continuous bands as Nomada goodeniana. The sternites are black and yellow with little red and the tegulae are orange. The antennae are completely orange, and the legs are mostly orange with partially black femora. The similar males can be confused with other species, but have certain characteristics that help distinguish, including an important difference to the females in that the basal segments of the antennal flagella are black on top. Nomada marshamella is a widespread, but locally common species that can be seen from April to June, although a second generation may occur during July if conditions are suitable. The primary hosts are Andrena scotica and Andrena trimmerana.
