Nomada flava

Flavous Nomad Bee (male)

HYMENOPTERA > APOCRITA | Aculeata > APOIDEA > Apidae

The most common tricoloured nomad where the females have a red marked thorax, but a species that is difficult to separate from Nomada panzeri and Nomada ruficornis. The characteristics of all three species need to be carefully checked to identify a female. The males average smaller than the females and have a completely black thorax, which may have a pair of red scutellar spots that can just be seen in one of the photos below. It is often stated that they are indistinguishable from Nomada panzeri but, if they have brownish thoracic hairs and all antennal segments are darkened above, they are very likely Nomada flava. Adults fly March to June. The primary host is Andrena scotica.
