Halictus tumulorum

Bronze Furrow Bee

HYMENOPTERA > APOCRITA | Aculeata > APOIDEA > Halicidae

One of two small, metallic, very similar Halictus species that are virtually impossible to separate from photos, but whereas Halictus tumulorum is widespread and common, the other species, Halictus confuses, is scarce and restricted to just a few southern heathlands. Halictus tumulorum frequents a variety of open habitats where there are light soils for nesting, including grassland, heathland, some brownfield sites and various coastal locations. The adults fly from March to September and visit many types of flowers, including spring-blossoming shrubs like sallows and blackthorn.
