Andrena flavipes

Yellow-legged Mining Bee

HYMENOPTERA > APOCRITA | Aculeata > APOIDEA > Andrenidae

The more common of the two medium-sized Andrena species where the females have buffish-white bands that fully occupy the apical depressions of tergites 1-4, a brownish-haired thorax and bright orange pollen brushes on the hind tibia. The males are also strongly banded and can vary considerably in size with some being very large. Andrena flavipes is a widespread and common species across southern Britain. They can be found in various open habitats both coastal and inland where they often form large and dense nesting aggregations. This species is bivoltine with a spring generation that flies from March to June and a second brood that may be seen from mid-June to September.

Andrena flavipes is the most frequently recorded Andrena species in Dorset.
