Andrena denticulata

Grey-banded Mining Bee

HYMENOPTERA > APOCRITA | Aculeata > APOIDEA > Andrenidae

The medium-sized females of this species have greyish-white bands around the apical depressions of tergites 2-4. The face and sides of the thorax are pale-haired, but the top of the thorax is black-haired. Males resemble small, slim females and have a characteristic ridge that runs along the hind margin of each gena. These can be seen in top view as an outwardly-curved lobe behind the eyes. Andrena denticulata favours composite-rich habitats, especially heathland and coastal dunes. It has a widespread, but patchy distribution with a flight season from late June to September.

Andrena denticulata was ranked abouth half-way down the Dorset list of Andrena species when I checked the NBN Atlas records in May 24.
