Andrena argentata

Small Sandpit Mining Bee

HYMENOPTERA > APOCRITA | Aculeata > APOIDEA > Andrenidae

Likened to a smaller form of Andrena barbilabris with the females having the same build, but with the white hair fringes of the abdomen being better developed and the pollen brushes of the hind tibia being whiteish rather than dark brown. Males tend to look very silvery in the field with long white hairs on the side of the thorax and conspicuous white hair fringes on the abdomen. The species is almost entirely restricted to southern heathland between Dorset and Surrey with only a few records elsewhere. It has a flight period from late June to early September.

Andrena argentata was ranked 23 of the 54 Andrena species recorded in Dorset, as of May 24.
